The Boston Athletic Association has confirmed that runners needed to beat their age-group qualifying standard by 5 minutes 17 seconds to secure a time-based place in the 131st Boston Marathon, which takes place on Monday, 19 April 2027. A total of 33,649 qualifiers applied during the registration window in mid-September, and 24,630 of them were accepted directly on the strength of their times.
The cut-off is applied to each standard in the same way. In the youngest men's group the 2:55:00 standard effectively becomes 2:49:43, while for women aged 18 to 34 the 3:25:00 standard becomes 3:19:43. At the other end of the age range, the men's 80-plus standard of 4:50:00 moves to 4:44:43 and the women's 80-plus standard of 5:20:00 to 5:14:43. In practice, a qualifier who merely scraped inside the standard had no realistic prospect of a place.
This year also introduced a new safety net in the form of the Boston Qualifier Selection, a random draw that adds around 1,000 places for qualifiers who met their standard but fell outside the cut-off. That brings the number of time-qualified entrants to 25,630, a record for the race, within an overall field of 30,000 that also includes professional athletes, para athletes and charity runners.
For the 8,019 runners who met their standard but were not selected, the remaining route to the start line is a charity place, with fundraising campaigns due to open in the autumn. The numbers underline how far demand for Boston has outstripped supply: more than 9,000 qualifiers were turned away by the time-based ranking alone, before the draw softened the blow for a fortunate 1,000.
Attention now turns to the 2028 cycle. Qualifying times run on or after 19 September 2026 count towards the 2028 race, and the B.A.A. has said the 2028 standards will match those for 2027, although downhill time indexes could still change. Runners targeting Boston will be watching autumn marathons closely, knowing that a comfortable buffer under the standard, rather than a narrow pass, is what the numbers now demand.
