What began as a two-horse race between Nike and Adidas has fractured into a genuinely competitive marketplace, with Asics, Puma, Mizuno and Hoka all fielding contenders capable of carrying a runner to a personal best. For anyone shopping for a marathon or track racer this autumn, the choice has rarely been harder or more interesting.
Asics has drawn the loudest praise. The Metaspeed Sky Tokyo, an update timed to the brand's home-market ambitions, has been landing near the top of independent test tables, with reviewers scoring it in the mid-nineties and singling out an official weight of around 129 grams. Testers describe a shoe that is highly ventilated, aggressively propulsive and built for personal-best efforts, continuing Asics' twin-model Sky-and-Edge strategy that lets stride-lengthening and cadence-focused runners choose a shoe suited to how they actually run.
Puma has arguably generated more hype than anyone. The Fast-R 3 arrived on the back of laboratory research suggesting its decoupled forefoot geometry improves running economy by margins that, on paper, edge past established favourites such as the Nike Alphafly and early Adidas Evo models. Independent testers have been more measured, noting that lab efficiency gains do not always translate cleanly to every athlete, but the shoe's arrival confirms Puma as a serious player rather than a curiosity in the elite racing space.
Mizuno, long a traditionalist, has surprised the market with the Hyperwarp Pure, one of the lightest racers available. Reviewers highlight a lower stack than most super-shoes, standing around 34mm at the heel, yet praise a ride that still feels cushioned and springy, particularly over 5K and 10K. It is a reminder that the super-shoe formula is not a single template: where some brands chase maximal stack and stability, others are betting that lighter, lower and nimbler wins the shorter races. Hoka's Cielo X1 line, meanwhile, continues to court runners who prioritise shock-absorbing cushioning over raw snap.
For all the marketing noise, the underlying science remains consistent. Peer-reviewed work continues to place the running-economy benefit of a well-fitted carbon-plate shoe at roughly four to six per cent, which over a marathon can equate to a couple of minutes for a trained athlete. The practical takeaway for club runners is unchanged: the fastest shoe on a lab treadmill is not automatically the fastest shoe for you, and fit, race distance and personal biomechanics still decide who actually gets to the line quicker. In 2026, at least, there is no shortage of excellent options to test.
