Kotter's victory came on one of Utah's longest-running road races, held annually on 24 July to mark the state holiday commemorating the arrival of Mormon pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley. The course has developed a reputation among competitive marathoners for its net-downhill profile, and Kotter used it to good effect, working through the field steadily rather than pushing an early pace, before opening a clear gap in the closing miles to secure back-to-back titles.
Paras's win was described locally as a farewell to Utah, with the runner preparing for a move away from the state that has hosted much of her racing career to date. She ran a controlled race through the canyon roads and residential streets that make up the marathon's back half, holding off a chasing pack to cross the line in 2:50:51 and cap her Utah tenure with the biggest title of her season.
The wider Deseret News Marathon weekend drew thousands of runners across its four distances. Jared Ward, the Utah-born Olympian, took the men's 10K title, while separate fields contested the half marathon on the same morning. Pioneer Day remains one of the busiest days on the Utah racing calendar, with families and club runners turning out alongside the competitive fields that chase the marathon's prize purse.
The 2026 edition marked the race's 56th running, continuing a streak that predates most of the major road majors on the modern calendar. Organisers had billed the build-up as a milestone year, and with Kotter and Paras both delivering statement performances, the race further cemented its status as one of the mountain West's signature summer road tests.
