With the Doha leg postponed and Shanghai-Keqiao confirmed as the 2026 Wanda Diamond League season opener, the lineups for the marquee sprint events have hardened over the past 48 hours. The men's 100m, scheduled for 21:05 local time on Saturday May 16, lists Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo and world silver medallist Kishane Thompson alongside Christian Coleman, Kenneth Bednarek, Trayvon Bromell, Akani Simbine and the Botswana-based 100m specialist Gift Leotla. It is, on paper, the deepest opening-meeting 100m field of any Diamond League season since 2019.

Women's 100m hurdles will see Masai Russell and triple world indoor champion Devynne Charlton headline an event that has produced an Asia all-comers' record on each of the past three visits to Shanghai. Russell, the reigning Olympic and outdoor world champion, has not competed in China since the 2024 Diamond League leg. Charlton arrives off the back of her dominant world indoor 60m hurdles defence in March and a low-key altitude block in Boulder, with her management confirming on Tuesday that her opening outdoor target is the Diamond League trophy and not, as some had speculated, an early world record bid in Doha.

Amongst the field events, world record holder Mondo Duplantis returns to defend his Keqiao pole vault title; long jump champion Larissa Iapichino opens her season under the same Italian flag she carried to indoor silver in March. The discus is the deepest single field of the meeting: six of the world's top ten men have entered, including Olympic champion Roje Stona, plus former Diamond League champions Matthew Denny, Kristjan Ceh and Daniel Stahl. The shot put serves only as an exhibition this year while World Athletics finalises its road-to-Brussels pathway.

Distance running, traditionally a quieter feature of the Keqiao programme, is unusually well stocked. Faith Kipyegon opens her 2026 season in the women's 5000m, marking her first race over the distance since the 2024 Olympic final. Australia's Jessica Hull, the world 2000m record holder, headlines the women's 1500m against four others currently inside the global top ten. Karsten Warholm, denied his expected Doha return by the calendar shift, drops to the men's 300m hurdles — a non-championship distance specifically arranged for the Norwegian's season opener. Athletes will run the longer 400m hurdles and 110m hurdles events later in the calendar at Rome and Stockholm respectively.

For Chinese audiences, the meeting also functions as a national stocktake. Local interest centres on Su Bingtian's farewell tour entry in the men's 100m B-race, Liu Shiying's return from injury in the women's javelin, and the development pathway 1500m for under-23 athletes that has been added as a national-only event before the main programme. Tickets sold out for the second consecutive year on Tuesday, and the Keqiao organising committee confirmed it expects approximately 38,000 in attendance for the evening session. The full elite lineup is published on the Diamond League website, with race-day livestream rights for the global audience handled by the Diamond League broadcast unit.
