A large-scale research project tracking thousands of runners over eighteen months has produced findings that challenge one of distance running's most widely repeated pieces of training advice. The Garmin-RUNSAFE Running Health Study followed 5,205 runners across 87 countries, recording 588,071 individual running sessions, and found that running-related overuse injuries frequently develop suddenly, often within a single training session, rather than building gradually over weeks as has long been assumed.
Roughly 35 percent of participants in the study sustained a running-related injury during the tracking period, giving researchers an unusually large dataset from which to examine the relationship between training load and injury onset. Rather than confirming the gradual accumulation model that has underpinned decades of training guidance, the data pointed to sharp increases in injury risk tied to specific sessions that deviated significantly from a runner's established patterns.
Central to the findings is a direct challenge to the widely used ten percent rule, which advises runners to increase weekly mileage by no more than ten percent to avoid overuse injury. The study found injury risk began rising with distance progressions of as little as one percent beyond a runner's longest run of the previous 30 days, a considerably lower threshold than the conventional guidance suggests, and one that researchers argue better reflects how injuries actually occur in practice.
The findings sit alongside a broader body of recent research reassessing how overuse injuries develop, including work using wearable accelerometers placed on the ankle, hip or lower back to track real-time acceleration patterns outside laboratory settings, with the aim of eventually predicting injury risk before it materialises. Separate research has also highlighted meaningful differences in running variability between injured and healthy runners, suggesting that consistency of form, not just training volume, may play a significant role in injury susceptibility.
For recreational runners and coaches alike, the practical implication is a shift in emphasis: rather than tracking weekly mileage totals against a fixed percentage ceiling, the research suggests closer attention should be paid to any single session that significantly exceeds recent long-run distance, regardless of how conservative the broader weekly build might appear. As more granular training data becomes available through consumer wearables, expect further scrutiny of long-held rules of thumb that were developed before this scale of real-world data existed.
