Hoka has formally launched the Cielo X1 3.0, the third iteration of its flagship super-shoe, in a spring release aimed squarely at the carbon-plated race-day market. Now available at hoka.com and authorised dealers worldwide at an MSRP of $275, the new model drops to roughly 7.5 ounces (213 g) in a men's US 10, down from the 8.1-ounce Cielo X1 2.0 that was released just last year. The weight reduction is the headline change of this iteration and moves the Cielo into direct competition with the lightest racers in the category, including the Nike Alphafly 3 and the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo.

The outgoing 2.0 was widely considered a meaningful leap for Hoka's super-shoe programme, solving the breathability issues of the original and pairing the brand's double-layer carbon plate with a PEBA midsole that reviewers compared favourably to Nike's ZoomX. The 3.0 retains that foam platform and plate geometry but pares away material at the upper, midsole sidewalls and heel collar to deliver the weight saving. Hoka says the stack height remains within World Athletics' 40 mm limit for road racing, preserving the shoe's legality for major marathons and track road events.

The upper is the most visually distinct change. Hoka has moved to a new, gossamer-thin jacquard mesh with structured overlays at the forefoot and midfoot, a departure from the more traditional engineered mesh of previous iterations. The tongue is fully gusseted but deliberately minimal, and the heel has been redesigned with an asymmetric collar meant to reduce Achilles irritation, a complaint that surfaced in some long-distance reviews of the 2.0. A revised outsole rubber layout concentrates grip under the forefoot while exposing more foam through the midfoot and heel to cut weight.

Hoka's timing is deliberate. The spring marathon season remains the most commercially important window for any race-day launch, and the Cielo X1 3.0 is arriving in retailers just as athletes and amateurs alike begin their final preparations for Paris, Boston, London and the domestic championship races that follow. Hoka-sponsored athletes have been racing early versions of the 3.0 since the NN Running team's winter block, and sightings at the Tokyo Marathon in March provided an informal debut. The brand is clearly betting that the early adopter pool at the Boston start line will form a key part of the launch narrative.

For the wider super-shoe market, the Cielo X1 3.0 confirms a trend that has shaped the 2026 category: incremental weight reduction is now the primary axis of competition, with most brands having converged on near-identical PEBA-plus-plate architectures. Whether these marginal gains translate to meaningful performance benefits for most runners remains an open question, but in the elite space the calculus is clearer — every gram counts, and Hoka has re-entered the conversation at the right moment and the right weight.
