Hoka has confirmed a global 15 May launch for the Skyward X 2, the second-generation flagship in the brand's max-cushion carbon-plated range. Priced at $225 and offered in standard, wide and extra-wide fits, the model is positioned as a daily training and long-run shoe rather than a marathon racer.
The headline change is weight: Hoka has shaved more than 10 grams per shoe versus the original Skyward X, primarily by trimming the rear stack and revising the midsole geometry. A reworked carbon-fibre plate has been re-shaped to sit more aggressively under the forefoot, working with a slightly lower heel to encourage a more engaged toe-off.
The upper has been overhauled with a new premium jacquard mesh that early reviewers describe as more accommodating across the midfoot. Hoka has retained the dual-layer PEBA-blend foam package that defines the X line, while pulling back enough material to bring the shoe closer to the brand's stated everyday cushioned trainer category.
Independent reviewers have generally welcomed the changes, though pricing remains contested. At $225 the Skyward X 2 sits at the top of the supertrainer bracket, where it now competes directly with the Asics Superblast 2, Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 and the Adidas Adios Pro Evo 3 platform descendants. Several testers have noted that the shoe feels noticeably less stack-heavy than its predecessor, with a livelier transition through the gait cycle.
The launch lands in a busy spring window for super-cushioned trainers and follows the spring rollouts of the Brooks Ghost 18 and Asics Kayano 33. UK availability is expected in line with the global 15 May date, with stockists already taking pre-launch interest. Hoka has also signalled that wide and extra-wide variants will ship at launch rather than as a delayed second wave.
