The fourth annual Jersey City Marathon and Half Marathon took over the city's waterfront on Sunday morning, with organisers estimating around 9,000 participants across the two race distances and a further several thousand spectators lining the course from Liberty State Park through downtown. The race has grown steadily since its 2022 debut and remains the largest spring marathon in New Jersey, with the Marquee Experience at Newport again serving as the hub for the start, finish and post-race festival. A favourable forecast of light winds and temperatures in the upper-40s Fahrenheit held through the morning, giving the field about as ideal an April day as the east coast routinely offers.

Road closures across Jersey City began in the early hours of Sunday and ran through the late morning, with the marathon route looping through Newport, Exchange Place, the Liberty State Park area and back along the Hudson waterfront before the finish on Washington Boulevard. Mayor Steven Fulop and race organisers had signalled for several weeks that participants and residents should plan around extended PATH, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and local bus adjustments, and by race morning most of the anticipated traffic pressure had been absorbed by the well-publicised travel advisories.

Jersey City is formally certified as a 2027 Boston Marathon qualifying event, and for many of today's runners that stamp was the primary draw. The course, a rolling but generally quick loop with only modest elevation change, has attracted a growing cohort of qualifiers in recent years; organisers said that marathon entries had closed two weeks before race day with demand for bib transfers continuing to the final hours. The half marathon, run concurrently, remains the more popular of the two distances and drew the majority of the morning's finishers.

The professional prize purse is modest compared with the World Marathon Majors but the race has become an increasingly credible regional showcase, with sub-elite fields in both the marathon and half that have steadily improved each year. Course records in both races have tumbled since 2022, and organisers suggested earlier in the spring that a serious attempt on the men's marathon record was possible if the weather co-operated. Full verified times will be posted through RunSignUp later on Sunday evening once chip-timing reconciliation is complete.

Beyond the racing, Jersey City has become a notable case study in how a second-tier American city can build a spring marathon quickly. The event has benefited from the close proximity of New York's running community, from a committed municipal sponsor relationship and from a course that favours personal bests without the logistical overhead of a Major. Organisers confirmed that registration for the 2027 edition, which will fall on the same third Sunday in April, will open to 2026 finishers within the next fortnight before general entry later in the summer.
