Keely Hodgkinson delivered a masterclass in indoor 800m running at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, smashing the championship record with a time of 1:55.30 to claim gold — the second-fastest indoor performance in history behind only her own world record of 1:54.87 set in Lievin last month.

The Olympic champion took control of the race from the gun, moving to the front within the first 200 meters and never looking back. By the bell, Hodgkinson had already opened up a significant gap on the field, and she powered through the final lap to win by a commanding 1.34 seconds from Switzerland's Audrey Werro, who took silver. The margin of victory underlined the 24-year-old's complete dominance of the event.

Hodgkinson's performance continued a remarkable 2026 indoor season that has seen her break the world record and win every race she has entered. After an injury-plagued 2025 season that limited her outdoor campaign, the Atherton-born runner has returned to form with a vengeance, producing times that suggest she could push the outdoor world record this summer.

The championship record had stood since 2014, but Hodgkinson obliterated it by over a second. Her ability to produce near-world-record performances in championship settings — rather than paced exhibition races — sets her apart from previous 800m champions. Coaches and analysts have noted that her front-running style in Torun demonstrated a new tactical maturity, as she no longer relies on a late kick but can dominate from the front at any pace.

Hodgkinson's gold was part of a historic weekend for British athletics at the championships, with teammates Josh Kerr, Georgia Hunter Bell, and Molly Caudery also claiming titles. With the outdoor season approaching, all eyes will be on Hodgkinson at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest this September, where she will be the overwhelming favourite for 800m gold.
