Pole vault world record holder Armand "Mondo" Duplantis is set to open his 2026 outdoor season at the Wanda Diamond League meet in Shanghai/Keqiao on 16 May, returning to the venue where he closed last year's campaign. The 26-year-old Swede confirmed his appearance through Diamond League promoters this week, and his presence elevates a Keqiao card already headlined by world champion sprinters Letsile Tebogo and Kishane Thompson and a 5,000m return for Faith Kipyegon. Duplantis enters the meet still holding every outdoor mark of consequence in the event, including the 6.31m world record he set in Budapest last summer.
The Keqiao pole vault is a homecoming of sorts. Duplantis won the inaugural meet in this format at the same Shaoxing complex in 2024 and again in 2025, with his last competition at the venue producing a meet record clearance at 6.05m before three credible attempts at 6.32m. He has never lost a Diamond League meet in China, and the runway, infield wind shielding and bar setting routine at Keqiao are all familiar — advantages that matter for an athlete who tends to set the bar with consistency in mind rather than building from a low opener.
The supporting cast in the men's pole vault has not been finalised by Diamond League organisers, but the meet typically draws a deep field thanks to its position on the calendar as a season opener. Last year's Keqiao competition included Sam Kendricks, KC Lightfoot and EJ Obiena alongside Duplantis, and a similar grouping is expected for the 2026 edition. Duplantis has spoken in recent interviews about a more measured approach to early-season meets this year, with Tokyo's outdoor world championships in mid-September the focus of his peaking schedule, suggesting he is unlikely to chase a record opener in Keqiao.
The competitive context is sharper than it has been in some years. Greek vaulter Emmanouil Karalis cleared a national record 6.13m indoors over the winter and posted his first 6.10m outdoors in April, narrowing the gap to Duplantis at the very top of the event. Duplantis acknowledged the challenge in a pre-season interview, saying it was healthy for the discipline but that his own programme had not changed. With no Olympic Games to peak for in 2026, the Diamond League season takes on additional weight, and an early Keqiao win at a comfortable height would set the tone before the Tokyo title defence.
Duplantis has also spoken openly about a busier off-track 2026 schedule, including the recent release of a track-and-field-themed anthem he co-wrote ahead of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship at Budapest's national arena in September. The Keqiao meet starts at 12:30 local time on Saturday 16 May, with the men's pole vault scheduled to open the technical events on the in-field. The Wanda Diamond League final at Zurich in late August remains the season-long target for Duplantis, with the world championships in Tokyo running 11–20 September the culmination of the year.
