New Balance and streetwear label Aime Leon Dore released their latest running collaboration on 9 July, pairing the brand's performance FuelCell platform with ALD's distinct design language across two silhouettes: the FuelCell Rebel v5 and the FuelCell SC Elite v5. The collection sold through ALD's own stores and online channels rather than New Balance's usual retail network, continuing a pattern of limited, fashion-led drops the pairing has run for several years.
The Rebel v5 arrives in a blue mesh upper that darkens toward a stacked, gradient midsole, finished with a dual-flower collaboration hit on the side panel and a neon green ALD tongue tag. The SC Elite v5 takes a different route, in dark green mesh with a black gradient sole that climbs further up the shoe than on the Rebel, reaching the toebox and heel, with orange ALD branding on the tongue and lateral heel.
Underneath the collaboration styling, the SC Elite v5 carries New Balance's Energy Arc carbon-fibre plate, which the brand describes as tuned for a more aggressive ride than earlier versions of the shoe. The Rebel v5 retails at $150 and the SC Elite v5 at $270, pricing the racing-oriented model well above the standard release and in line with other limited super-shoe collaborations on the market.
The drop reflects a wider trend of performance running brands using fashion partnerships to reach buyers who may never race in the shoes at all. Hoka, Salomon and On have each pursued similar strategies over the past two years, treating technical running silhouettes as a canvas for streetwear collaborations that trade on scarcity and design rather than pure performance marketing.
For competitive runners, the more relevant model in the pairing is the SC Elite v5's underlying construction, which New Balance has positioned as lighter and leaner than the v4 it replaces. Whether the ALD colourways themselves see race-day use or end up as display pieces, the collaboration puts the brand's current racing-flat platform in front of an audience well outside its usual running-shop customer base.
