parkrun publishes its participation figures weekly, and the numbers for the first Saturday of September are a useful corrective to the way the organisation is usually described. On 6 September there were 2,310 parkrun events and 534 junior parkruns operating worldwide, with 387,000 adult participants and 42,000 juniors taking part and 54,000 volunteers on duty. Those are the headline totals. The flow figures underneath them are the interesting part.
In that one week, roughly 27,000 people registered for a barcode and around 16,000 of them completed a first parkrun. Some 5,700 participants crossed into a running milestone club and about 960 into a volunteer milestone club. A registration-to-participation conversion of a little under 60 per cent in a single week is a reminder that the barrier to entry is genuinely low: most people who sign up turn up, and they turn up quickly.
The junior network is the structural story. At 534 events it is now roughly a quarter the size of the adult network, and its 42,000 weekly participants represent a pipeline that did not exist a decade ago. Junior parkrun awards milestone shirts at 10 finishes rather than 25, a deliberately lower threshold, and the effect is to give children a recognition point within a couple of months of starting rather than within a year.
Milestone clubs do a quiet amount of work in keeping people in the system. The thresholds at 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1,000 finishes, plus separate volunteer equivalents, create a series of medium-term goals for a population that mostly is not training for anything. Volunteer milestones matter more than they are usually credited for: an event needs a rota of around 20 people every week, and a recognition structure for turning up in a hi-vis vest is what makes that sustainable without paid staff.
Set against a registered base approaching 12 million across 25 countries, weekly totals in the hundreds of thousands make the scale of dormancy obvious. The vast majority of people who have ever registered are not there on any given Saturday, and parkrun has never pretended otherwise. The figures that indicate health are the weekly inflows, and on this evidence they are holding up.
