The TD Beach to Beacon 10K, one of New England's largest single-day road races, is preparing for its return to Cape Elizabeth, Maine on Saturday 1 August. Founded by Olympic marathon champion Joan Benoit Samuelson, the race has grown into a fixture of the summer road-racing calendar, drawing a field that regularly tops six thousand runners to a stretch of Maine coastline rarely opened to a race of this scale.

The course runs from Crescent Beach State Park to the Portland Head Light, taking in ocean views, rolling terrain and the kind of coastal scenery that has made the event a bucket-list race for recreational runners well beyond New England. Its combination of a genuinely competitive elite field and a huge charity and community turnout has kept it distinct from bigger-city 10Ks that lean more heavily on one or the other.

This year's designated beneficiary is Dirigo Reads, a volunteer-run Maine nonprofit that provides a new book every month to first graders across the state's public schools during the school year. Beach to Beacon has rotated its primary charity partner annually since its founding, and organisers say the fundraising built around race weekend has become a meaningful part of the event's identity alongside the racing itself.

Race weekend build-up begins on Friday 31 July with the Kids' Fun Run, the Beacon Walk, Run and Roll, and the high school mile, all held the evening before the main event. Registration windows for the 10K itself have already closed in stages this year, with legacy runners who have completed every edition of the race, along with sponsor and charity bib holders, securing places ahead of the general field.

The race arrives in a crowded stretch of the summer calendar that has already featured the Peachtree Road Race, the Boilermaker 15K and the Bay to Breakers, part of a broader pattern of well-established regional road races continuing to draw strong fields even as marathon majors dominate the sport's headlines. For competitive road runners building toward autumn marathon cycles, Beach to Beacon remains one of the more reliable tune-up tests on the domestic 10K schedule.
