The 49th GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon rolled out of Mel Lastman Square in North York at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, with organisers reporting more than 22,000 entrants across the marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K from more than 70 countries. The marathon has long advertised its net-downhill profile from suburban North York to Ontario Place on the Lake Ontario waterfront as the most accessible Boston qualifier in the country, and Sunday's start-line breakdown matched that pitch: organisers said roughly one in seven marathon entrants had targeted a BQ on race day.

Toronto's marathon course descends a little under 90 metres net from Mel Lastman to the Ontario Place finish, with most of the elevation surrendered through the Yonge Street corridor between Lawrence and Bloor in the first ten kilometres. Race organisers reported a 12.3 per cent BQ qualifier rate from the 2024 edition, the strongest of any major Canadian marathon, and have leaned into the qualifier identity in their international marketing alongside the more glamorous TCS Toronto Waterfront race that occupies the city's autumn slot in October.

The elite field is comparatively modest by World Marathon Majors standards but deeper than past editions, with several Canadian sub-elites returning after using the race to chase a Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games standard earlier in the spring. The men's title in 2025 went to Kenya's Philemon Kibet in 2:14:10, while Canadian Camille Bouchard took the women's race in 2:35:01; both have not been confirmed to return. With no global championship marathon on the calendar until 2030 in Athens, the spring window in Toronto has shifted toward national-level depth rather than international fastest-of-fast bidding.

Conditions on Sunday morning sat in the low single digits Celsius at the start with light south-westerly breezes off the lake, the kind of cool, dry profile that has historically delivered the race's fastest finishing times. SportStats is handling timing, and the live tracking feed went up at 7:00 a.m. The Metropolitan Toronto Police Service published the full road closure map on its website on Friday, with closures along Yonge Street, Lakeshore Boulevard West and Bayview Avenue lifting on a rolling basis as the back of the half marathon field cleared each section.

Toronto's running calendar has thickened considerably in the last decade, with the May marathon, October's Waterfront race, the Sporting Life 10K later this month and the Wings for Life World Run flagship leg now anchoring a seven-month spring-and-summer block of mass-participation events. Sunday's marathon is the largest spring road race in the country and one of three major North American marathons running on the same first weekend of May, alongside Pittsburgh and Cincinnati's Flying Pig. With the 50th edition due next year, organisers told reporters at the expo that they are eyeing a 25,000-entrant ceiling and a tightened elite field for 2027.
