The first weekend of August brought one of the busiest stretches of the North American ultramarathon calendar, with Oregon's Waldo 100K Trail Run serving as the marquee event alongside a wide spread of races catering to almost every distance and format. Waldo has built a reputation as one of the more scenic and demanding 100K courses in the Pacific Northwest, and its early-August date has become a fixture for runners using it as a proving ground ahead of the autumn's bigger 100-mile efforts.
In Wisconsin, the Badger Trail Races offered runners a rare same-weekend choice of distances along the Badger State Trail, with 100-mile competitors starting at 6am Saturday under a 36-hour cutoff and the 100K field following at 9am. The layered start times allowed slower and faster fields to share the course without the congestion that can affect races with a single mass start, a format increasingly common among mid-sized regional ultras.
Pennsylvania's Loopy Looper added another dimension entirely, running 12-hour, 24-hour and 101.25-mile divisions simultaneously from a 7am Saturday start at Cooper River Park. Timed and looped ultras like Loopy Looper have grown steadily in popularity, offering a more sociable, spectator-friendly format than point-to-point mountain courses while still testing runners over genuinely long distances.
Further afield, Louisiana's Summer Night Ultra and the Canadian Death Race both added to the weekend's spread, the latter continuing its reputation as one of the more punishing mountain courses on the calendar. Taken together, the weekend's races illustrate how deep the North American ultra scene has become outside its headline names, with quality competition and strong turnout well beyond the sport's best-known 100-milers.
The weekend also marks the unofficial start of a stacked month. Sierre-Zinal follows in the Swiss Alps on 8 August, KAT100 by UTMB runs in Austria the same weekend, and Leadville Trail 100 and UTMB Mont-Blanc both arrive later in August. For athletes and fans alike, Waldo and its fellow season-openers offer an early read on form heading into what is shaping up to be one of the sport's most competitive Augusts yet.
