While the sprint finals drew most of the pre-meet attention in New York, it was the distance events that opened the 2026 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium, and both 10,000m titles went to athletes who had to work for every metre of them. Sydney Vaught claimed her first US title over the distance, while Woody Kincaid produced a sharp closing kick to deny Grant Fisher in the men's race.
Vaught's win came in 33:30.60, built on one of the more unusual pacing patterns a championship 10,000m can produce: an 18:09 opening 5,000m so slow it bordered on a jog, followed by a 15:21 closing 5,000m that shredded the field apart. Rather than waiting on a sit-and-kick finish, she took over at halfway and pushed hard enough for long enough that only she was left standing by the bell, turning a tactical crawl into a demonstration of raw strength.
The men's race followed a different script but delivered no less drama. Kincaid won in 30:13.66, closing his final 200m in 25.95 to reel in Grant Fisher on the home straight, a finish that underlined how competitive the event has become at the top of American distance running. It was Kincaid's third national 10,000m title, following his win at the 2023 championships and his victory at the Tokyo Olympic Trials, and Fisher, one of the most consistent championship performers of the past several years, was left to settle for second despite a strong closing effort of his own.
Both results carry weight beyond the medals awarded in New York. With Icahn Stadium hosting the national championships for the first time in 35 years, the meet has taken on added significance as a selection event for major international competition later in the year, and strong distance performances on the opening day set a competitive tone for the sprints and field events still to come.
For Vaught and Kincaid, the titles add to what has already been a notable season, and both now turn their attention to how the results translate into international selection. For a championships meet that many expected to be defined by its sprinters, the 10,000m finals were a reminder that the distance events remain just as capable of producing the day's most compelling racing.
