The 2026 HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc has confirmed two of the most material changes to its rulebook in years. The mandatory medical certificate, until now a non-negotiable for any of the Chamonix start lists, is no longer required following a change in French legislation governing sporting participation. In the same set of regulatory updates, organisers have made the long-trailed carbon contribution mandatory for every confirmed runner.
The medical-certificate rule had been a recurring friction point for international entrants, who often had to translate documents and chase signatures in the weeks before pre-registration closed. UTMB has not removed all health requirements: runners are still expected to declare their fitness to participate and to follow the same on-course safety standards, but they no longer need a doctor-signed declaration as part of the entry pack. UTMB Group says it remains free for any race director to require an additional check at later stages of qualification or selection.
The carbon contribution, by contrast, was previously offered as an opt-in payment that funded the event's environmental programmes. From 2026 it is collected automatically as part of the race fee, with the amount calculated against each runner's departure address and the most likely mode of transport to Chamonix. UTMB has framed the change as a step in the same direction as its broader sustainability strategy and has flagged the funds as ring-fenced for low-carbon travel incentives, on-course infrastructure and Mont-Blanc valley conservation work.
Reaction in the registration period since pre-registration opened on 8 January has split along familiar lines. Runners travelling from outside Europe have noted that the new contribution is a meaningful uplift on the existing entry fee. UK and continental runners have largely welcomed the simpler entry process and the formalisation of the contribution, though several regional clubs have asked UTMB to publish a more detailed breakdown of how the funds are spent.
The 2026 HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc takes place from 24 to 30 August. UTMB confirmed selected runners by 4 February and is now into the operational phase of the year, with travel logistics, mandatory kit communications and accommodation reminders going out across the qualifying and confirmed entry list. The summer programme begins much earlier on the calendar, however, with the World Series schedule already running into its peak European leg.
