The 13th edition of the Wings for Life World Run is now four days from its global start, with the flagship event in Vienna pinning down its final operational details on Wednesday. Organisers confirmed that 13,500 runners will take to the line in front of Schonbrunn Palace at 13:00 Central European Summer Time on 10 May, with another 504 satellite events syncing to the same starting signal across 67 countries.
Vienna takes over flagship hosting duties from Munich for 2026, with the imperial palace forecourt acting as the start area and the route weaving through the Ring boulevard before opening up onto the long, flat stretches of the Danube Island. Pace markings will guide entrants through the first 10 kilometres, after which the race's distinctive Catcher Car will roll out of Schonbrunn 30 minutes after the gun, gradually accelerating until it has overtaken the final remaining runner.
On the elite side, Ugandan half-marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo has been confirmed as the headline athlete in Vienna and is widely expected to push the men's global distance further than last year's 67.39 kilometres. Notable Austrian sport figures Dominic Thiem, Andreas Goldberger, Lukas Müller, Thomas Morgenstern, Johannes Lamparter and Valentina Höll have also been confirmed in the start area, lending the flagship a high-profile cross-sport feel.
Race week logistics are now finalised. Bib collection and the event village open at 09:00 on race morning, a mass warm-up has been programmed for 11:30, and start blocks are released at 12:00. Organisers said tracking on the Wings for Life World Run app, which now allows participants to run their own course anywhere in the world while still being chased by a virtual Catcher Car, will go live in the final 48 hours before race day.
The event remains entirely a fundraiser: 100 per cent of entry fees are channelled into research grants for spinal cord injury, with cumulative donations from previous editions now well past 50 million euros. Organisers said registrations for the Vienna mass event were within a few hundred of the cap on Wednesday morning, with similar near-sell-out reports arriving from satellite events including the new flagship-scale gathering in Sao Paulo and the long-running showpiece in Cape Town.
