Wheelchair start protocols, modified course barriers, integrated finish-line timing and the convention of launching wheelchair fields ahead of the elite runners all trace back, in different ways, to the conversations Hall's 1975 finish forced into the open. Other cities — Chicago, New York and, eventually, London — followed Boston's lead in formalising wheelchair divisions during the late 1970s and 1980s, using the Boston model as their template.
