Brooks released the 20th edition of its long-running Cascadia trail shoe on 1 August, and the headline change is one trail runners have asked for across several generations: a genuine Vibram Megagrip outsole in place of the brand's own rubber compound. Twenty editions in, the Cascadia has built its reputation on stability and durability over outright grip, and the switch signals Brooks is finally willing to chase the traction credentials that rivals from Hoka and Salomon have long used to sell technical trail shoes.
The Cascadia 20 lands at 8.9oz for men's and 7.8oz for women's, with a 43-35mm stack height and an 8mm drop that keeps it firmly in the moderate-cushion, moderate-drop camp rather than chasing the maximalist stack heights that have crept across much of the category. The TrailTack rock plate and Pivot Post outrigger, long-standing Cascadia signatures for protection and lateral stability on uneven terrain, both carry over largely unchanged.
The update arrives as part of one of the busiest Augusts on record for trail shoe launches. Hoka's Tecton X 4, its carbon-plated trail racer, is due on 20 August with a 40-35mm stack and 5mm drop. Salomon has reworked the foam on its S/Lab Genesis, a shoe that reportedly sold out within its first season, for a refreshed version arriving early in the month. Asics, meanwhile, has extended its road-to-trail Novablast franchise into a dedicated trail model, built in part on lessons from prototypes that Tom Evans and Ben Dhiman raced in at UTMB the previous summer.
Early wear-testers say the Cascadia's Vibram switch changes the shoe's character on wet rock and loose scree more than on the packed singletrack the model has traditionally excelled on, a predictable trade given Megagrip's reputation for technical terrain. Whether that shift alienates long-time Cascadia loyalists who bought into the shoe for its stability rather than its grip remains the open question of the launch.
With four established brands refreshing flagship trail models inside a single month, August 2026 is shaping up as a genuine inflection point for trail shoe design, one where outsole compound, rather than stack height or plate technology, has become the newest battleground.
