Tamarack Race Weekend's Saturday night centrepiece, the Ottawa 10K, doubled again this year as the Athletics Canada Canadian 10K Championships, with the elite women off the line at 5.45pm and the elite men plus the wider field rolling out at 6.00pm. Wellington Street and the parallel section along Sussex carried a denser crowd than the 2025 race weekend, the result of a sold-out elite road series and a championship status that has drawn back several Canadian internationals who had skipped the event in recent seasons.
On the women's side, Rachel Hannah headlined the start list with a stated aim of attacking the Canadian 10K record over a course she has run for prize money before. Malindi Elmore returned to the same race for the first time since her marathon focus shifted to the Berlin window, and Erin Mawhinney filled out a top trio that organisers had publicly identified as their championship podium contenders. The women's field also included a deep secondary group hunting Athletics Canada championship standards rather than the outright win, which has typically split the race into two distinct contests at the closing kilometre.
The men's race was framed around a return showdown between Ben Flanagan and Cam Levins, with seven runners on the start list owning personal bests under 29 minutes. Flanagan, who has used the Ottawa 10K as a late-spring sharpening tool for his Boston-to-Berlin marathon block, said in Friday's press conference that he was carrying the heaviest mileage of any of his Ottawa starts but had still arrived ready to race rather than tempo. Levins, recently back from a winter foot stress reaction, had targeted Ottawa as his first championship effort of 2026 and was expected to push the pace through 5K to keep the kick honest.
The course, which loops west along Wellington and back through the ByWard quarter before finishing on Elgin near City Hall, is fast by Canadian championship standards but unforgiving in its closing 2K, where a rise out of the Rideau Canal corridor has decided several previous editions. Pacing was set at sub-28 for the men's lead group and sub-31 for the women's, with both groups effectively running for championship medals and city-record bonuses rather than international qualification times this far out from the late-summer global window.
Saturday's 10K is the curtain-raiser for Sunday's Ottawa Marathon, which carries its own elite Canadian field led by Kinsey Middleton and Reid Coolsaet on the men's side. Run Ottawa has flagged the championship double as a deliberate scheduling decision, designed to keep the same domestic stars in front of an Ottawa crowd across both nights of the weekend. Full Canadian 10K Championship results, including age-group medals and team scoring, are expected on the Athletics Canada and Sportstats portals once gun-time and chip-time reconciliations are complete.
