Tyler Fenwick and Renata Silva won the elite titles at Waldo 100K in Oregon's Cascade mountains on Saturday, front-running a technical, high-altitude course that starts and finishes near Waldo Lake. Fenwick's winning time of 9 hours 42 minutes held off a late charge from two-time podium finisher Cole Whitfield, while Silva ran alone for the second half of the race after breaking clear on the course's signature climb past Twin Peaks.

The result was one of four elite finishes across a genuinely packed opening weekend of August on the ultra calendar. In Wisconsin, the Badger Trail Races crowned champions across its 100-mile, 100km, 50-mile and 50km distances on the crushed-stone rail trail courses that wind through the region's farmland and prairie, with the 100-mile field setting off at 6am Saturday and given 36 hours to finish.

At Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, New Jersey, the Loopy Looper's 12-hour, 24-hour and 101.25-mile races played out on a flat, fast 3.75-mile paved loop, a course profile that rewards even pacing over technical skill and tends to produce some of the higher average mileages on the domestic ultra calendar. Meanwhile in Alberta, the Canadian Death Race returned to Grande Cache for its latest edition, its reputation for brutal terrain through the Canadian Rockies intact since the race's founding in 2000.

Weather played a smaller role than in recent weekends, with the Cascades staying clear and mild through Saturday, a contrast to the heat that battered the Speedgoat 50K field at Snowbird a week earlier. Course conditions at Waldo were reported as firm and fast for most of the field, contributing to a men's winning time inside the race's all-time top five.

With UTMB still three and a half weeks away, this weekend's results offer an early form guide for athletes weighing a late-summer double, while the sheer spread of races, from technical mountain courses to flat looped ultras, underlines just how varied the domestic trail and ultra scene has become heading into the back half of the season.
